Social Network, the Movie and Sponsor Theory

I finally watched The Social Network, the movie. Very good.
But after I saw all the pieces of the jigsaw together, I immediately constructed a theory in my mind.
I am convinced that Mark Zuckerberg ordered ans sponsored this film. And why?
Well, the more famous he became, more versions of his story started to pop up.
Books, articles, blogs, gossip. That’s bad for business and, I believe, bad for the stomach of any 20-some year old guy.
So, why not tell the world his own version? And who else could do this with a …

People Love Fiction

The rescue of the 33 miners in Chile, became the media and marketing spectacle of the year.
But, one week after, it doesn’t really matter what happened down there, in those 68 days.
Now, what everybody wants to know is when it will become a movie, a book and, who knows, a Broadway musical, a Disneyland ride, a Playstation game.
Yes, people are more interested in fiction, then the reality and the facts.
And that’s why news seems and sounds more like romance these days.
People don’t really care who the miners actually are, but …

The Creative Bastard

I like to research how some creative guys work.
No, come on, not ad guys. I mean painters, comedians, musicians, artists. And most of the time, cinema directors.
I like to study their processes, their challenges, what they had to cut or leave behind, what they had to improvise.
I like to know how Coppola organizes his material, how Woody Allen crafts his characters, simple shots and sharp dialogues, what kind of problems that Scorcese has or what happens inside Pixar.
It’s just a hobby, nothing serious or nerdy: I buy some books, watch …

HA! Social Media Guru

Here’s a good way to start the week:

We all know people like this and wish they’d just come clean. Also I’m a big fan of site that lets you make a text into a “movie”… worth a look.

The Creative’s Way

I know that this is an old topic but I don’t have anything else to write about. I finally got around to watching Freaks and Geeks. And I liked it. I’m not going to go on about all the future stars that were in it: Seth Rogan, James Franco, and Jason Segel just to name a few. Nor am I going to whine about its cancellation, because it deserved to get cancelled – it started off strong but loses its mojo halfway into the season.  What I am going to …

How’s Clever?

“How’s that working out for you?”
“What?”
“Being clever?”
“Great.”
“Keep it up then… Right up.”
It may be one of the best slices of dialogue in the history of film. (I’ll leave it to the movie buffs to fill in the title. Clever you.)
The line fits life. And it certainly fits advertising. As a young copywriter, one can easily fall under the misconception that your job is to come up with clever copy. You mix metaphors with wild abandon. You wake tired clichés from the dead. You make a living at clever. Clever is …

The Perfect Actor

Patrick Swayze never won an Oscar (although he did get a couple of Golden Globe nominations along the way). He wasn’t the biggest box office draw. And he wasn’t someone young actors typically drew upon for inspiration.
But still, when I think about his career, I see the perfect actor. His movies left lasting impressions. On both men and women. Mention the movie Road House to almost any guy, and you will almost certainly see their eyes brighten. They will start quoting Swayze’s character, Dalton. “Be nice, until it’s time to …
