Another football analogy

22 February 2010 One Comment

“Great idea! But, they’re never going to buy it.”

I’ve heard that my whole career.

“Trust me. I know this client and they will never buy something like this.”

al pacinoThe final blow sounds something like this:

“Right now, this client isn’t super happy with us. Are you really willing to fall on the sword for this? Are you really willing to jeopardize our account for this idea?”

You probably know how the story ends.

Does anybody have any advice?

In football, we hate it when our team punts. In life, we punt all the time. But, in football and in life—the most exciting times are when you go for it.

I have been paying specific attention to this particular annoyance and I have never, ever, ever, ever seen anyone correctly second-guess a client.

My advice is, don’t leave the client relationship in the hands of others.

Get to know your clients and make sure they get to know you.

That’s the only way to build trust and once you have trust you can do almost anything.
