What do I do for a living? I’m not sure.
In the past month I’ve worked on banner ads, websites, emails, online video tutorials, landing pages, direct mail packages, product packaging and a few TV commercials.
I’ve been pretty busy, for sure.
It makes me think back to the mid-90s when I was wondering what I should do with the rest of my life.
I remember thinking at the time that it would be fun to work in advertising. I was fortunate enough to make that dream happen.
As I look at the stack of briefs on my desk, I wonder—do I actually still work in advertising?
Not sure, but I’m still having fun, whatever it is that I do.
Just feels like it needs a new name. It’s not ‘marketing’, that’s too broad. But it sure doesn’t feel like ‘advertising’ is broad enough to cover it either.
Any thoughts?

Kind of on the same topic. I am often faced with the question of what I actually do as an art director. I think most are confused with the difference of being a designer and an art director.
good point, andrew. i know quite a few art directors who are confused about this as well. there’s a lot more to being an art director than making stuff look pretty.
At the risk of raising a few hackles, here is how I have always seen the difference between art directors and designers.
Art directors are more intersted in the broader concept and designers tend to be more focussed on aesthetics only.
Where an art director sees a headline, a deisgner sees only letter forms.
Swear to God, I’ve worked with several designers who have left words and even entire phrases out of sentences and not been able to see it even when it’s pointed out to them.
