Get out of my way

Why is it that so many online ads still insist on being annoying, intrusive and an all-around pain in the ass?
You see them every day—the pop ups, the roll-overs and those straight-from-hell expanding ads at the top of pages. Plus, my personal favorite—the ones that have the ‘hidden’ close buttons.
I’ll be honest here, while I have a fair amount of digital experience, I do not consider myself an ‘expert’. So perhaps I’m missing something. But it really seems that online advertising—much more so than any other form—goes out of its …

Scientists and Artists…. literally, dozens of them.

Artists, Scientist, Researchers, Inventors, Organizations, festivals, Exhibitions, conceptual
and technical reading sources.
The field of art and technology, entertainment engineering, media arts and dance and
technology is immensely connected via the web, through fantastic print and web
publications as well as 100′s of museums and organizations who support media artists and

Are apps the new main course?

Mobile is all the rage. Apps are the future. The world as we know it has changed forever.
Now take that sentence and swap out the words ‘mobile’ and ‘apps’ for just about any other marketing buzzword from the past 70 years (radio, TV, outdoor, cable, internet, guerilla, moonvertising).
Rest assured, we’ve heard it all before. So is it different this time?
Well, yes and no. Sure, mobile is a big deal. And I’ve never seen anything explode onto the scene as dominantly as apps have in the last 2 years. So if …

Photospeak

A friend of mine showed me this iphone app and it’s pretty sweet in a really creepy way. It’s called Photospeak and it can basically turn a regular picture into a talking one, kind of like the framed pictures in Harry Potter. It’s a paid app, but my friend swears it’s the best $3 he’s ever spent.

There’s no such thing as social media

Social Media. Have you ever really thought about this phrase? It’s a bit daft, really.
Media isn’t social. People are. It doesn’t describe what you mean when you use it to suggest the conversations around a brand or a cause.  It puts the emphasis on the location rather than the substance or purpose of the communication. We don’t talk about ‘social transport’ or ‘social stadiums’ or ‘social eateries’. So in truth, it really is a very misguided choice of words.

In it’s purest form, Social Media is any public or published medium …

Q. What does ‘varicose’ mean? A. Nearby

Is technology good for education? There’s lots of debate around this – I’m a huge advocate of technology. Love it. But I’m not yet convinced too much of it belongs in the classroom. It might be a little ‘old school’ of me, but you need to know the rules in order to break them. A good foundation of knowledge that you can own when there’s no electricity supply around for you to ‘research’ it.
One way to look at it is that we should teach our children how to master their …
