Art Shmart

I don’t really like art. I know this is probably blasphemy to many people, particularly all of the wannabe Picassos in the ad industry. But, for me, art is just kind of okay.

Yeah, I appreciate the talent involved. And I can look at a painting or sculpture and enjoy what I see. But when people say they ‘love’ art, I just don’t get it.

The thought of even 1 hour at a gallery or museum and I’m like a 10 year old being dragged to the mall with his Mom while she goes shoe shopping.

I think a lot of people probably feel the same way, but won’t admit it because we are all supposed to love art. You are some kind of uncultured heathen if you feel otherwise.

Here’s a simple way to find out if you are on the same page as me. If someone suggests spending an entire afternoon at The Met or some other fancy museum, how do you react? Are you genuinely excited? Or do you find yourself thinking of how much your feet are going to hurt from standing all day?

Do you immediately start thinking of excuses not to go while feeling compelled to tell the person how bummed you are because you really dig Monet?

I would rather stand outside the Met and admire its architecture. I would rather walk into the park and stare at the trees. Or watch the people running, biking and rollerblading. I would rather walk over to the river and watch the boats go by.

In fact, I would actually rather watch someone in the process of creating art than have to go see the finished piece in some gallery filled with hipsters sipping chardonnay.

Which I guess means that I would literally prefer to watch paint dry.
